This time around, it was the left-armer who took the wickets. Abdur Rehman bowled sharply and accurately for 10.1 scintillating overs, during which he made England look as competent as Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard.

After two outstanding teams in the shape of the Gs and Hs, it’s down to earth with a crash with the Is. Luckily there were just enough candidates to ensure that Ronnie Irani and Faisal Iqbal did not need to be selected.

Australia vs. India, Third Test: Preview

When you’ve lost six consecutive Test matches away from home, you could really do with not playing the next match in conditions that are alien to you, yet ideal for your opposition. So it must be with at least a smidgeon of apprehension that India travel to Perth.

2011: Year of the bowlers?

Ideally, Test cricket should have bat and ball in equilibrium, so that the best batsmen can be rewarded, but bowlers always have a chance of taking wickets. If that balance can’t be achieved- whether for reasons of weather, playing surface, ability or lack thereof – then the next best is a match that favours the bowlers.

The Alphabet XIs: E

Well this was harder than we thought. It’s a very Anglo-centric team, with England providing seven players. Yet there were few other candidates from around the world, such is the paucity of eligible, but worthy, players.
