Number four in our series of end of season reports sees guest correspondent Arjun Miglani talk about a Test whitewash, last place in the CB series and finishing behind Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. Happy times indeed.
The third in our series of end of season review looks at New Zealand. Was it truly a winter of discontent? Or was that just because it wouldn’t stop raining?
It was a rather splendid winter for Pakistan; for all their troubles and controversies on and off the pitch for several years now, it is a good feeling to be able to focus on the cricket.
Way back in the fairly bleak midwinter, we offered each of the Test nations a mid-season report. Now that the clock is ticking over from the winter of 2011/12 to to the summer season of 2012 (with only the West Indies vs. Australia series outstanding), we thought it would be appropriate to give our verdict on how each side fared as they collected their air miles over the past six months or so.
For no particular reason apart from they are relatively fresh in our minds, we’ll start with Sri Lanka.
The long-awaited latest instalment of the Alphabet XI’s arrives with a T side based around an English core, in tribute to their sensational winter’s cricket. It is not the most talented XI, but with a workmanlike top order surrounding a genius to provide the runs and perhaps the fastest attack of all, they are not to be underestimated.
Last week we presented our previews of the county cricket season, divided appropriately between Division One and Division Two. Following on from these guides, some of the 51allout staff met (or did we?) for a pre-season discussion and to make some predictions.
Is it that time of year already? Lambs in the field, blossom on the trees, extra ice cubes in our G&Ts and the sound of cricketers everywhere retreiving their kitbags from the attic and smacking their foreheads in annoyance when they realise they left half a sandwich underneath their pads all winter.
In a twist on the usual mode of starting with the dregs and finishing with the best, we turn first to the County Championship Division One and give our thoughts on each team’s prospects for the season. For any pedants out there, we’re mainly talking Pro40 and the First-Class season, we’ll cover the T20s in much more detail when they come around later in the year.
With England being well and truly trounced in their Test series against Pakistan, they now face Sri Lanka in uncomfortable conditions and with a number of questions needing to be answered. Some of the 51allout contributors have thus sat down and submitted their bold (and not so bold) predictions for the series, and at the very least gives up something to come back to for amusement once the two matches have finished.
We turn to a man who looked incredibly unaccomplished at the start of his international career but against all odds, became a crucial member of a resurgent team. Before going quite shit again.
